Uganda's most recent coins

Uganda’s current series of coins comprises 50, 100, 200 and 500 Shilling coins. The coins were introduced on 4th January 1999. All notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Shillings will steadily disappear and then cease to be used as from 31st December 2000.

The first of these new coins are all dated 1998 and are the product of the Royal Canadian Mint. The RCM won the 2.75 million USD contract for a total of 75 million in 1997. In November 1999 it was announced that 40 million more coins had been ordered from RCM by the Bank of Uganda. Assumably these next coins will be dated 2000 - but who knows ? I have not heard or seen of any of these yet.

The 50 Shillings of Uganda's current series of coins.

However the fact that the 50 Shilling coin is now the smallest denomination of money easily available to Ugandans in everyday trading is causing a bit of upset since prices in shops etc.. are having to be rounded to the nearest 50 Shillings.

A key type to the Ugandan circulation coins is the 5 Shillings of 1972. (Image of reverse from Wang Wei)

Most of these were soon re-called but they are seen for sale from time to time.
The equilateral curved-heptagon shape of this coin was quite a new thing at that the time,
having been seen on just 50 Pence coins (G.B., Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland)
before this issue debuted in 1972.
