The Occasion of the Closing of The IMI Mint
These images are from a September 2001 “visitor” to the
newsgroup uk.rec.collecting.coins
and the information contained in these items helped me
to find out a number of the finer
details of the histories of the “H” and “KN” mints.
The Medallion
The Medallion, 33mm diameter, Copper-Nickel.
Obverse reads:- “KINGS NORTON 1912-31” / “WITTON 1931-91” / “THE IMI MINT” / “KN”
Reverse reads:- “STRUCK AT THE IMI MINT ON THE LAST DAY OF ITS OPERATION AS AN INDEPENDENT MINT.” / “COMMEMORATING 79 YEARS OF MINTING AND ALL THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ITS EMPLOYEES.” / “9th AUGUST 1991”
The “Certificate of Issue”.
(Notice the “6” over “5” - obviously there had been confusion
about the number made or to be made !)
The Letter
Notice a few clues of the what the mint had produced during its existence.
One notable statement in the letter is:- “Only 60 of
these medallions have been struck
and are a keepsake for those who worked in the IMI
Mint or closely with it.”
