Casino Tokens
Bi-metallic casino token from the Polana Casino (Image
from Martin Peeters)
This is a bi-metallic token from the casino at the
“Polana Hotel”, one of the top hotels in Mozambique’s capital Maputo
and situated is one of the city’s most prestigious areas. The casino at
the “Polana Hotel” was opened in October 1996. This token was first
known to me in February 1999. The first side of the token shows the
hotel’s logo - a wreath around a “P” and the word “Polana” in fancy
italics. The second side shows the top of a palm tree such as those
that surround the hotel in great numbers. Gambling laws in Mozambique
state that places for gambling must be at least 50 kilometres away from
the nearest city. The casino at the “Polana Hotel” gets around that
aspect of the legislation by being a membership only club. One night
membership can be easily obtained - so much to the rules!
In 2004 I got two further tokens from the Polana
Casino. One is Copper-Nickel and the other is Brass/Bronze. As with the
bi-metallic piece, a denomination is not shown.

There is just one other casino in Mozambique, it is
called the “Sol Libombos Casino”, it opened 30th May 1998 and it is
located in the town of Namaacha which is close to the country’s border
with Swaziland. This casino is over 50km from the nearest city and so
it is open to the public - no need for membership. I do not know of any
tokens for this casino but likely it uses some type or other.
