Mozambique’s 2006 dated coins
I first
saw promotional images of Mozambique’s 2006 dated coin series about a
week before their first issue date, 1/July/2006. On that day the
government re-valued their currency at a rate of 1000 old Meticais to 1
new Metical and launched new coins and notes in the new currency. The
nine new coins were 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 Centavos and 1, 2, 5, 10 Meticais.
The six new notes were 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Meticais.
Circulation of the old money would continue, but would not be allowed
after 31/December/2006.
I got my set of the coins on 23/September/2006. They are a nice set of
clear designs with only two bearing any resemblance to previous coins
of Mozambique. They were all designed by Michael Guilfoyle (this
information via a "Freedom of Information" request to the British Royal
Mint). He is
perhaps best known for his various designs for Republic of Ireland
Euro-denominated silver collector coins. The coins were all minted by
the British Royal Mint.
Now to take a look at the coins…
The common obverse to all nine pieces in the set comprises the date
“2006” and the legend “BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE” around the bank’s
logo. Reverse design and other details are given below along side
images and other info for the coins.
